Japan tax-free refund calculator
For purchases from 1 November 2026, you pay the full price in the shop and get the tax back when you leave Japan. Add your receipts to see which ones qualify and roughly how much comes back.
One line per receipt (and per tax rate if a receipt has both). Type the store name the same way each time; same store + same day are added together.
Planning the whole trip?
The Japan Trip Planner 2027 spreadsheet has this tracker built in, plus a day-by-day itinerary, a budget in yen and your currency, and a JR Pass check.
Coming soonWhat this calculator checks
- ¥5,000 or more, tax excluded, at the same store on the same day.
- Leaving Japan within 90 days of the purchase date (shown as "Near limit" from day 88).
- 10% standard tax, or 8% for food and drinks you take with you.
What it cannot check
- Only purchases at registered tax-free shops count. Ask the shop and show your passport when you pay.
- Not eligible: consumables (cosmetics, snacks, drinks) that you use or open in Japan, goods you don't take out of Japan, and gold or platinum bullion.
- Every item on a receipt must be with you at the airport tax-free terminal, before you check in your bags.
- The refund is paid by the shop or its refund service provider, and fees can reduce it. This is an estimate, not the amount you will receive.
